Harmonix and XNA Creators Club allowing anyone to upload their own music to sell as DLC; open beta starts in late August, initially 360-exclusive.



It's no secret that getting music into a big-time rhythm game can spark significant sales for aspiring and established artists. Until now, the biggest problem for those wanting to get in on the action was cracking the games' tightly controlled setlists. That looks to change soon, as MTV Games and Harmonix today announced Rock Band Network, a program that lets bands prepare and release their own tracks for sale as downloadable content in the game.

DC Universe Online and Free Realms developer cuts 5 percent of workforce from payroll to "increase operational efficiency," cut costs.



Last month, Sony Online Entertainment boasted of a successful launch for its Free Realms massively multiplayer online role-playing game, which saw more than 3 million users sign up within its first seven weeks of release. That wasn't successful enough, apparently, as today the developer confirmed for GameSpot that it had instituted a round of layoffs.

The software giant reveals its stores will likely be near rival Apple Stores, with more to open in 2010.



Back in February, Sony announced the closure of its sole US PlayStation Store in San Francisco's Metreon complex. That same month, Microsoft announced it was had hired an ex-Wal-Mart executive to create a chain of retail outlets to rival the dozens of Sony Style stores across the country. Now, the software giant has revealed to GameSpot sister-site CNET that the first of its outlets, which offer Xbox 360 wares, Zunes, and other hardware, software, and devices will soon open.

Microsoft reveals which tweaks announced at E3 will find their way into Xbox 360 online service first.



While Project Natal and the Xbox 360 debut of Metal Gear Solid stole the show at Microsoft's Electronic Entertainment Expo media briefing, not everything the company revealed was so far off in the future. Some of those plans are nearing fruition, as Microsoft has confirmed a handful of additions to Xbox Live that were revealed at E3 will be included in the next update to the Xbox 360 online service.

Publisher confirms Sony console edition of downloadable fighter will lag two weeks behind its Xbox 360 counterpart.



At the same time that Marvel vs. Capcom 2 was first confirmed for release on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, a single-player demo version of the game arrived exclusively for Sony's console. No doubt some Xbox 360 users looked at their PS3-owning counterparts with jealousy as a result, but the tables have now turned.
