GamesCom 2009: Thinner, matte-finish 120GB model goes on sale first week of September; 80GB $299, 160GB $399 starting tomorrow; new PS3 motion-control details at TGS; PSN to offer <100MB "PSP Minis" casual games; digital comics coming in November.

COLOGNE--While GamesCom won't open its doors to the public until tomorrow, today may see the biggest news to come out of the massive trade show. This evening, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has summoned reporters, analysts, and industry types to gather for its press briefing, initially believed to be three hours long.

GamesCom 2009: Sony to offer "snackable" titles through downloadable game service; initial lineup of 15 games to include Tetris and Sudoku.



The PlayStation 3 isn't the only thing getting smaller. At its GamesCom 2009 press conference today, Sony announced a new line of downloadable PSP games called PSP Minis. Capped with a 100MB size limit, Minis are intended to offer players a "snackable" gaming experience.

This morning, Sony headlined its GamesCom press conference with the long-rumored debut of the PlayStation 3 Slim, saying the streamlined 120GB device would be available worldwide during the first week of September. The conference was reminiscent of Sony's 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo press conference, if only because the publisher used its time in the limelight to unveil a similarly spoiled overhaul for its handheld, the UMD-less PSP Go.

Hours before Sony's GamesCom press conference, the US retailer begins taking preorders for long-rumored console; FYE shows 80GB going to $299, 160GB to $399; September launch now confirmed.


Following a series of markdowns of current PlayStation 3s in the US and Europe, yet more evidence is mounting that a cheaper PlayStation 3 Slim will be announced shortly. Just hours before Sony's GamesCom press briefing was slated to begin in Cologne, Germany, US retailer K-mart began taking preorders for the console.

Sony Computer Entertainment America wants to change the way people play games, and that's not just marketing speak. The PlayStation 3 maker has filed patent applications for a number of improvements and substitutions to the standard controller interface in recent years, going beyond the motion-sensing control setup revealed at E3.
